Love diamonds? Then you must love India. Not only some of the finest jewels were found here but also it has many feathers in its cap vis-à-vis diamonds. The more you will know, the more you'll be bedazzled by India's association with diamonds.

Surat! Who does not know about this city of Gujarat. The whole world comes here for the polishing and cutting of their diamonds. From American states to European nations and Asian countries, this port has been fulfilling diamond refining needs of the world. For a very long time, diamantaires were operating from humble workshops here but with time, more modern facilities have come in. Besides Surat Diamond Bourse, the city also awaits a common facility centre and once it is operational, the whole business is expected to get a major fillip. With that, it would not be wrong to say that diamonds holds a lot for India in the future too.

But if you think that’s about it. Then you know too little about this great nation called India. Its history is full of surprises and knowing that it was once upon a time the hot bed of diamonds, your heart will swell with pride. The earliest diamonds were found in India in 4th century BC, even though the youngest of these deposits were formed 900 million years ago. For good 1,000 years, until 18th century, India was the only source of diamonds to the world. A majority of these early stones were transported along the network of trade routes that connected India and China, commonly known as the Silk Road.

No wonder, Britishers, who had come to trade in India, conquered the nation deceitfully and filled their coffers with our produces for good 200 years. FYI, the sparkling diamond in the crown of the Victorian Queen is an India gem - Kohinoor. It was originally mined from the Golconda region of Andhra Pradesh during the Kakatiya dynasty's reign and belongs to the successors of Mahlak Deo.

That's not all. India also masters the art of crafting diamond jewellery. You would be glad to know that Polki jewellery which is one of the prominent segments in India is a speciality of Bikaner, Rajasthan. Made of unfinished natural diamonds, Polki is essentially an uncut diamond that is mined from the earth in a natural way without any enhancement or lab creation. But when embedded into jewellery, the effect is so mesmerising that Polki jewellery has got takers not just pan India but also around the world.

So the country that has a diamond-studded past, present and future, surely will strike a chord with diamond lovers from across the globe.
